2011 Volunteer Lake Monitoring

kerrieFor the past several years, volunteers have been assisting Cook County SWCD by heading out to lakes throughout the county to take samples of the water.
During the past Summer, the following 10 lakes were monitored: Mayhew Lake, Little Iron Lake, Iron Lake, Birch Lake, Leo Lake, Aspen Lake, East Bearskin Lake, Tom Lake, West Twin Lake, Elbow Lake, and Gust Lake. Samples are being taken for chlorophyll a, phosphorus, water clarity and temperature. Volunteers also note the weather and recreation lake uses. Each lake is monitored five times a season, from May to the end of September.
The monitoring provides a baseline and trend analysis for the health of the lake. The analysis provided by lake monitoring, provides a way to ensure the lakes are remaining healthy throughout the county. In Cook County, we have healthy lakes which help support a community both environmentally and economically.

ilenaThank you to Jerry Peterson, Tom Hayden, Dave Klett, Glen Siegle, Olya and Jeanne Wright, Rebecca Wiinenan, Jim Hall, Dave Little, Andy McDonnell, Grant Dornfeld, Ezra Lunde, Finn Gary, Mike and Lin Sherfy, and all those volunteering outside the Cook SWCD program on their own to monitor the lakes of Cook County. Without your time and dedication, the program would not be a success.
