Birch Grove Community Center Project Background

History:
The 1% tax steering committee finished in the spring of 2009 with a list of possible projects and estimated funding potential...The Birch Grove Center in Tofte was on that list. Although LHB had designed a complete recreation project with a cost of 1.5 million, the steering committee had reduced the possible amount to $500,000. We have revised the project to meet that lesser amount and have found funding for a significant portion of the project.

The project consists of rebuilding the tennis court, outdoor basketball court, and hockey rink with a warming house and outdoor vault toilet. It also includes paving the entrance, exit and the parking lot to the community center. The only community center building updates are new sidewalks and an upgrade to the 45 year old kitchen (including new flooring, two new commercial ovens, ice maker, and new dishwasher).

Total Projected Costs: Under $500,000

Other sources of funding: Tofte has already found other grants and sources of funding for some of the projects. We have received a grant from IRRB for the sidewalks, and have just had them installed. The cost was $10,500. We have found funding for ½ of the paving project for a total of $40,000, and for drainage/erosion control of $9800. The survey has also been completed, at a cost of $2200 as well as the soil bore sampling for $1200. In summary, surveying, sidewalks, soil bore samples, drainage/erosion control and ½ of the paving have just been completed and paid for. This funding of $63,700 represents approximately 13% of the total project.
