MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE COOK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

Grand Marais, Minnesota

June 29, 2010

The Board met in special session this 29th day of June, 2010, at the Courthouse in Grand Marais, Minnesota.

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. with the following members present: Commissioners Sobanja, Johnson, Fenwick and Martinson.  Absent:  Commissioner Hall.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and possibly take action to approve a contract with KGM Contractors to complete designated asphalt projects for Cook County while they are in the area working on other jobs.

New Cook County Highway Engineer David Betts attended the meeting and Commissioner Sobanja made introductions.

A motion was made by Fenwick, seconded by Johnson, and carried to approve the agenda for the meeting as amended.

Highway Maintenance Supervisor Russell Klegstad appeared before the board to present two possible road projects, one on the Sawbill Trail and the other on Bayview Drive.  Klegstad presented a report summarizing the two projects and said that the Highway Department recommended going forward with the Sawbill project but not with the Bayview Drive project.  He explained that considerable savings would be realized by having KGM complete eight (8)  patches on the Sawbill Trail while they were working in the area.    A motion was made by Fenwick, seconded by Martinson, and carried to approve having KGM patch the Sawbill Trail as presented at a cost of $24,150.

The Board discussed the damage to the Springdale Road caused by KGM Contractors when hauling rocks to the Tofte Airport for storage.  The conditional use permit issued by the County included the provision that KGM would bring the road back to its original condition.   Commissioner Martinson explained that the agreement between the Town of Tofte and KGM to allow the rock hauling  included a provision that KGM would build a new road to haul the rocks away at a later time.  No action was taken on this issue.

There being no further business, motion was made and carried that the meeting be adjourned.
