HELP KEEP EMERALD ASH BORER
OUT OF COOK COUNTY

Where are the EAB traps in Minnesota?

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), a beetle that kills ash trees - even healthy ones, has reached Minnesota. Currently Houston and several metro counties are quarantined from moving firewood outside of the designated quarantine.

Transporting firewood is the number 1 means of spreading EAB. Campers bringing ash firewood into the County pose the greatest risk to our local ash stands. U.S. Forest Service reports indicate over 20,000 acres ash stands in the Superior National Forest within Cook County alone, not including ash that is intermixed with other tree species. The visual impact to our County, as well as the economic impact, could be extensive.

Currently the DNR has regulations on utilizing only "certified firewood"within State Parks in Minnesota. The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday, May 26, 2009 to use all legal means possible to keep these pests from entering the county, and research is underway. The County is working in partnership with eh USDA Forest Service - Gunflint and Tofte Ranger Districts, who are also investigating what efforts that agency can undertake to keep EAB out of Cook County.

PLEASE Encourage your neighbors, friends, families and visitors to help keep EAB out of Cook County by buying/burning only local firewood. Local firewood has a certification tag and can currently be found at most local service stations and at State Parks.
