Tom DeWitt and his son, Ben, have been mapping soil in and around the Grand Marais area as part of the Natural Resource Conservation Service Arrowhead Soil Survey project. Surveyors depend on the cooperation of local landowners to gather important data necessary for mapping the soil.

The Arrowhead Soil Survey project is scheduled to complete mapping of soils in Cook County by late 2014. Soil Survey is funded in part by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources. To view images of the soil survey, please visit the Cook County Soil & Water Conservation District website at http://www.co.cook.mn.us/index.php/government/departments/soil-and-water If you have further questions, feel free to contact us via phone or email.
